Get Involved with GLA: Volunteer and Leadership Opportunities

by | Feb 10, 2026 | Get Involved, News, Volunteers

In our recent community survey, many of you asked for greater organizational transparency and more ways to get involved. We heard you, and we are excited to share opportunities to participate in meaningful ways.

We welcome everyone to express interest in volunteering with one of our active committees or in a specific role. Whether you want to help lead or prefer hands-on work, there is a place for you to share your skills, support the watershed, and connect with the GLA community.

Committee Volunteer Opportunities

Our committees do important work that supports our programs, outreach, and long-term impact. We would love to welcome new volunteers in the following areas:

  • Communications and Education – Help share the GLA’s story and inspire stewardship by writing blog posts or educational articles and/or capturing photos and videos.
  • Community and Government Relations – Represent the GLA at community events such as the Fourth of July Parade, the Leelanau Farmers Market in Glen Arbor, and the M22 Challenge kayak wash.
  • Development and Membership – Support fundraising efforts, help recruit new members, welcome supporters, and participate in fun events that bring our members together.
  • Finance and Investment – Provide financial oversight and guidance to help keep the GLA strong and responsible. CPAs are especially encouraged to get involved!
  • Invasive Species Watch – Join our community-based monitoring program by watching for Eurasian watermilfoil and reporting sightings.
  • Office and Administrative Support – Assist with mailings, event preparation, and other behind-the-scenes tasks that keep the GLA running smoothly.
  • Shoreline Steward Educators – Receive training to provide shoreline consultations for property owners. Volunteers help neighbors implement best practices that protect water quality and support healthy habitat.
  • Volunteer Coordinator – Communicate with volunteers, help organize the volunteer appreciation event, and connect potential volunteers with organizational needs.
  • Water Levels Committee – Serve as a River Captain to help monitor water levels and support coordination related to the Crystal River Dam. Great for people who love getting outdoors, rain or shine!
  • Water Quality Committee – Get out on the water and support year-round water quality monitoring and invasive species response efforts.

Express Interest in Joining the Board of Directors

We are also pleased to launch an open call for members to express interest in serving on the GLA Board of Directors*. Serving on this active, engaged, and hands-on Board offers a chance to help guide the future of the GLA and protect the waters we all care about. Board terms are three years. If you are interested in board service, please submit your interest by March 1.

*To serve on the Board, you must own or co-own riparian (waterfront) property with real property rights on Brooks Lake, Crystal River, Big Glen Lake, Little Glen Lake, Fisher Lake, or Hatlem Creek, and be a member in good standing—meaning you made a donation of $50 or more—within the past 12 months. If you have previously served six years on the Board, you must wait three years after your term ended before you are eligible to serve again.
