Invasive Species Update: Sea Lamprey

by | Jul 18, 2024 | Invasive Species, News

Thanks to the eyewitness account of a local riparian, an invasive parasitic Sea Lamprey was recently identified swimming upstream from the Crystal River Dam. This observation is highly unusual because historically, the dam has prevented lamprey migration from the Crystal River to Fisher Lake and Glen Lake.

In response to this report, the GLA has reached out to the federal U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and reported the sighting. We’ve also requested that the dam be inspected. Sea Lamprey, if left unchecked, could negatively affect the trout population in Glen Lake.
