Join Me in Preserving Glen Lake This Holiday Season

Dear Members and Friends of the Glen Lake Association:

In this year-end appeal, I want to bring attention to a pressing matter that is separate from and in addition to our annual membership dues for 2024, now due by January 31, 2024—I am writing to elicit your generosity to rid beautiful Glen Lake of the invasive species Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM). This highly invasive plant attacks and significantly disrupts the natural ecology of inland lakes. Look no further than neighboring Lake Leelanau or Crystal Lake for examples of the costly consequences of this plant taking hold.

This past fall, our valiant Boat Wash Staff detected EWM fragments in Little Glen. The GLA immediately jumped into action with a rapid response plan to identify the source. We have since formed a task force, including our highly regarded Watershed Biologist, Rob Karner, to develop a best-fit strategy for eradication and solicit additional input from other leading scientists. But we need your help.

Membership contributions are our primary source of funding for the Association’s annual operating expenses, funding vital water quality monitoring and educational activities to protect the watershed.  A meaningful year-end gift from Glen Lake Guardians like you would ensure that the GLA has the needed resources to fight back against EWM before it can take irreversible hold in our Glen Lake.

Like many of you, Glen Lake has always been the most special place for me since I was a child. Our family discovered this magical lake in the 1950s, and I have looked forward to returning to it each year, now bringing my own children. I want to do my part—and more—to make our community stronger and preserve the Lake for my family and others for generations to come.

I am proud to support the GLA with my time, talent, and treasure. The pressures currently facing our watershed from both an increase in visitors and residents are already placing an unprecedented strain on our unique and fragile area. Now, we face the existential threat of EWM. These challenges require each of us to do more and give more to protect our treasured Glen Lake.

As you reflect on family, tradition, legacy, and community during this most wonderful time of year, remember all that Glen Lake has given to you. Give generously to the future of Glen Lake this season. Wishing the happiest of holidays to you and yours!

With my most sincere gratitude,

Stan Kryder, GLA President
