July is Keep It Blue Month
July is Keep It Blue Month—our community-wide campaign to raise awareness about water quality in the Glen Lake/Crystal River Watershed and inspire simple actions we can all take to protect it.
The pristine water of the Glen Lake/Crystal River Watershed is no accident. It takes all of us—members, volunteers, local partners, and supporters like you—to preserve what makes this place so extraordinary.
That’s why we’re putting out the call to everyone who lives, works, and plays in this watershed to help us Keep It Blue!

Why “blue?”
While not every water body in the watershed is literally blue, Glen Lake’s signature color reflects its clarity and overall health. That clarity matters. Glen Lake’s condition directly affects downstream lakes and the Crystal River.
Lakes age naturally, but human activity can accelerate the process. Runoff, fertilizers, outdated septic systems, and other pollutants introduce excess nutrients like phosphorus into the water. This may produce harmful algal blooms which can turn clear, blue water into murky green.
Invasive species like Eurasian watermilfoil, or EWM, also pose a threat. EWM can hitch a ride from lake to lake on boats, trailers, or gear. Once introduced to a lake, it spreads quickly and forms thick mats that degrade water quality, outcompete native plants, and make recreation difficult. This makes proper boat washing crucial to protecting the watershed.
Together, we can fight these and other threats to safeguard water quality for the future. We need you to Keep It Blue!
